Type CHAIN"" and press RETURN.
Select the skill by pressing a number key:

1-4 (Expedition or Adventure)
5-8 (Exploration or Arcade)

The Game

There are over 50 screens in the game. Draw a map of the network as you explore it.

Expedition or Adventure Mode

Your objective is to collect as much gold as possible and deliver it to the bank. If you cannot find the gold (not all trucks have a useful cargo), have fun exploring the territory. And try not to get lost! Level 4 is completely dark so drawing a map is essential.

Game complexity increases with skill level but so do the points and the gold available.

Important. As there are strong elements of adventure in this game, there are some things which you will have to discover for yourself.

Exploration or Arcade Mode

Rack up your score as you explore the vital parts of the network in your runaway train. Change the points using the P key and strive to stay alive. Practise exploring in the drak at level 8. But remember, you can get stuck in this mode - something else you have to discover for yourself.

The Display

The display shows the current level of game play; your score and 'Hi-Score'; and helpful text (e.g. screen description). At the bottom of the display are the current fuel and water levels, a not of your speed, the last control pressed and indicators showing what cargo is connected to the train.

Use Of Controls

Cursor Right - Acceleration forwards
Cursor Left - Acceleration backwards
Space Bar - Slow down
P - Change next set of points in direction of motion
U - Uncouple rearmost truck next time a buffer or other truck is encounterd. This instruction is cancelled if you change speed or points before uncoupling takes place.

Speed

Once moving, speed is maintained until you accelerate, use an arrow key to reverse the direction, or tap the space bar brakes. The train accelerates or slows down more readily when lightly laden. If a buffer is struck at 20 mph or less, the train will bounce off; otherwise it will crash. Beware! Your train will not respond to changes of speed when it is crossing points. You will soon discover that you cannot change the speed of the train when playing the Arcade or Exploration version. But your train will bounce off the buffers even at 60 mph.

Points

As the train approaches a set of points (either forward or reverse), pressing the P button will switch them. The points 'clank' as they change. If you run into a set of points that are facing the wrong way, you will run off the track. Reversing quickly will avert such a crash. The rogue train will change all the points in its own favour as it passes through, so take care. The ghost train will pass through your locomotive, leaving you safe, but you can never be sure whether the runaway is a ghost or a rogue.

Trucks

A maximum of three trucks can be pulled. To couple up to a truck, reverse towards it at a speed of 20 mph or less. The truck will connect to the train and the train will then move forwards. To uncouple the rear truck, reverse at 20 mph or less towards a buffer or stationary truck. Press U shortly before contact is made. The truck will be uncoupled and the train will then move forward. The cargo indicator at the bottom right-hand corner of the display shows what trucks are connected.

Fuel And Water

To refuel or take on water, simply park the train by a fuel dump or water tower. Transfer of fuel and water is automatic but you cannot move the train when it is being refuelled. Some fuel and water points are empty, as you will discover when you try to use them. In the Arcade or Exploration version there is no need to take on water or refuel.

Delivering Gold

The gold truck is coupled up in the usual way and delivered by uncoupling next to the Bank.

Repairing Bridges and Track

Bridges and track are repaired by delivering the appropriate cargo to the screen containing the broken track. Then you must discover what to do next. Look out for the screen message!

Hazards

  1. Runaway Trains. Every so often (more often on higher levels), a runaway rogue or ghost train passes by. You will hear the rogue train's whistle rising in pitch as it approaches. If it hits you, you are both dead. If you are lucky, however, the train will be a ghost train and pass right through you.
  2. The Outlaws. When you've got the gold, outlaws may attack you when you stop. Outrun them, or you'll lose the gold!
  3. Fuel and Water. Don't run out of steam!

Lives

You have extra lives in the Expeditionary or Adventure mode. These are shown as little locos in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Each time you are given a new life your water and fuel levels will be restored to their maximum. To continue after derailment, move carefully in the opposite direction. To restart after losing all your lives select your level number and press the relevant number key firmly. You have only one life in the Arcade or Exploration mode.
