Micro English

Introduction

Micro English is a complete English language O Level self-tuition or revision course of 24 easy-to-use programs. It inclodes more than 580 questions. Some programs control audio tape (supplied so that the computer appears to talk sensibly and teach the user by speech, and the written word, as a private tutor would. No extras are usually needed. It was designed and tested in school by two English teachers and a curriculum adviser, and written by a qualified programmer.

Micro English is as similar to the O Level Exam as possible. That is, it emphasises the application of the rules of English, not the rules themselves; it includes both questions that are answered normally and questions answered by multiple-choice; correct English only is required, extra marks are not given for writing creatively; and the course is divided into three equal sections, comprehension tests, summaries and composition.

It is suitable for ages 8 to adult. The subjects covered are common to all examining boards. i.e.:

  • Punctuation
  • Elementary spelling
  • Advanced spelling (like an advanced "Speak-and-Spell" machine)
  • Vocabulary tests (meanings of words)
  • Figures of speech and arrangement (e.g. similes, metaphors and alliteration)
  • Word reducation for summaries
  • Words commonly confused (e.g. effect and affect)
  • Irregular plurals
  • Eight passages to be summarised
  • Eight comprehension tests, each passage having 20 questions
